9 Cheesy 90s Action Films That Were Secretly Awesome

4. Escape from LA (1996)

Escape From LA Snake Pliskin returns! Kurt Russell + John Carpenter! Oh man what an awesomely bad movie! Yet another post apocalyptic prison colony movie. Snake Pliskin is once again captured and exiled to the prison island of LA. The city was of course separated from the mainland by The Big One prior to the movie's events. He's tasked with retrieving a doomsday device stolen by the president's daughter Utopia (again with the names!) Snake teams up with Steve Buschemi, Peter Fonda and Pam Grier to fight the likes of Bruce Campbell and others on their way to the island's gang leader Cuervo Jones. Snake of course growls all his corny one liners as only Pliskin can and kicks a lot of ass along the way. While the final line of the movie ("Welcome to the human race") is deserving of mocking admiration for its incredible awfulness, what really sets this movie apart is the surf chase. Yes folks, that's right, Kurt Russell and Peter Fonda surfed a flooded L.A. River to chase down the bad guys. Welcome to the Awesome Race.
