9 Famous Film Directors Who Have Lost Their Touch (That We All Pretend Are Still Awesome)

2. Bryan Singer

Bryan Singer is one of the most overrated filmmakers working today, yet is beloved by comic book fans for films like X-Men and X2. I would urge those fans to re-watch those films, because now that we know what great superhero movies look like, it's hard to appreciate them as much. I'm not saying they aren't enjoyable, and Singer certainly deserves credit for being the kick in the rear that the superhero genre needed, but that doesn't change the fact that the guy isn't a very good director. His best film is undoubtedly The Usual Suspects, but his career slowly goes downhill from there. He left his X-Men franchise to direct the pretty bad Superman Returns, and followed that up with Valkyrie and Jack the Giant Slayer before going back to the X-Men. Time will tell if he can turn Days of Future Past, the overly crowded and uber expensive quasi-reboot/cast reunion into a hit, and I choose to remain cautiously optimistic. However, let's stop pretending Singer is awesome, because frankly, he's not.
