9 Filmmakers Who Apologised For Their Movies

5. Jack Black - Envy

Ben Stiller and Jack Black were the stars of this eye wateringly unfunny black comedy, which received such bad test screening results that it almost went straight to video. When School Of Rock was a huge success the studio decided to take a chance with it, where it quickly died in cinemas and failed to make back its budget. It felt like the writer of Envy came up with one gag, and then wrote an entire movie around it. The joke is that Black€™s character invents a spray that instantly cleans dog poo, which he dubs €œVapoorize€. That might get a smirk the first time, but as it€™s the only joke they have to keep repeating it. A couple of years later at a press conference for Shark Tale, both Black and studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg publicly apologised for the movie. Katzenberg told the crowd that he €œapologised profusely€ for Envy, with Black backing him up completely.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
