9 Filmmakers Who Apologised For Their Movies

3. J.D. Shapiro - Battlefield Earth

J.D. Shapiro €“ one of the credited writers on Battlefield Earth - wrote about his experiences working on it in an article, which is a lot more entertaining than anything in the film. He starts out by apologising to anyone who went to see it, before explaining how he was drawn to a Scientology centre because he heard it was a great place to meet woman. After making a few friends he was invited to dinner with John Travolta, who soon offered him a chance to write the script for Battlefield Earth. Shapiro had no interest in Scientology or their beliefs, yet the offer to write a blockbuster was too good to resist. He wrote a dark script that everyone claimed to love, before he was ordered to change it and make it camper. He found the changes silly so he refused to make them, which got him fired. He takes no responsibility for the how the final product turned out, though he does admit to feeling a small sense of pride; of all the bad movies that exist, he wrote one of the worst. When Battlefield Earth was €œawarded€ the Golden Raspberry statue for "Worst Film Of The Decade" he came to collect it in person.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
