9 Interesting Parallels Between Cannibal Holocaust And The Mondo Movie

5. The Natives

Ihfrihfr Mondo movies like to wallow in the bizarre and they really are cinematic freak shows. With titles such as Savage Man, Savage Beast and Brutes and Savages, the Mondo Movie had, by the time Cannibal Holocaust had come around, established a "Let's gawk at the savage people and their primitive lives" mentality. A First World sniggery, gawping attitude towards indigenous people. Cannibal Holocaust is no different in its treatment of native people - they do weird sacrifices, tribal dances and, of course, eat flesh. Cannibal Holocaust attempts to out-nasty the Mondo film by having its 'savages' abort a foetus and throw it in the mud, kill a woman with a stone dildo, and impale a young woman on a stake. These scenes could come from any of the harder Mondo Films (such as the work of the Castiglioni brothers) and they show that Deodato was embracing Mondo genre conventions. To be as outrageous in what you portray on the screen as you possibly can be.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
