9 Movie Franchises That Literally Do The Same Thing Repeatedly

2. Limbs Flying Everywhere - Star Wars

Bond Villain Scars
Lucasfilm

The Star Wars films, with the possible exception of The Last Jedi, are made up almost entirely of recycled plot beats, lines and entire set pieces. Impenetrable superweapons with one weirdly specific weakness; a revelation that someone is a relative of someone else; a Wilhelm scream every 7 seconds... I could go on.

One trope that never seems to get old, however, is the almost comical amount of times that characters lose a limb, mostly to a lightsaber. Famously influenced by Akira Kurosawa's 1961 samurai classic Yojimbo, Obi-Wan Kenobi is first seen cutting off the arm of an aggressor in the Mos Eisley Cantina. This is followed with Darth Vader cutting Luke Skywalker's arm off at the climax of The Empire Strikes Back, and Luke subsequently cutting off one of Vader's (robotic) arms during the final duel in Return Of The Jedi.

The prequels further elaborate on this with Anakin Skywalker losing all 4 of his limbs over the course of the trilogy. Other victims of such a fate include Count Dooku (both arms before his head), Mace Windu, General Grievous, C-3PO (sort of), Supreme Leader Snoke and countless other unnamed goons, bounty hunters and attacking monsters.
