9 Movie Heroes Who Stupidly Turned Evil For The Sequel

2. Jim Phelps - Mission: Impossible

A twist that remains controversial to this day, the decision to turn Jim Phelps – the leader of the IMF team in the original series and all round good egg – into a murderous traitor for the movie is one that angered many fans, and even the cast of the show.

The original Phelps actor Peter Graves refused point blank to do the movie upon learning this, leading to Jon Voight replacing him. The movie tries to reason logically why the character could have become bitter and disillusioned after the end of the Cold War, but it’s hard to reconcile how the upright moral centre of the series could become an out and out monster for the movie.

Some fans like to consider the series separate from the movies for this reason, but there are clear links that tie them together, making Phelps turn to the dark side canon.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
