9 Routine Things Movies Do To Set Up The Sequel

3. Giving Us One Line of Exposition for the Plot Sequel

Perpetrators: Back to the Future, Super Mario Bros http://youtu.be/CUj8laqrsEo Quick, from that clip, what can you tell us about what we can expect from the sequel? How about "exactly the same thing as the first movie?" And while that may not be enough to wet your appetite, some movies take it a bit further and give you the most basic run-down of things to come, like that of the Back to the Future franchise. At the end of the first movie, Doc Brown makes haste to get into the future to save Marty's kids. That's all we know. Installment number two will make good use of the future and that's all we're left waiting for. And, no, we can't expect the first movie to end with a trailer for the second movie, but they did leave an awful lot of breathing room to do with a "save the kids" plot that somewhat mirrors that of the one we just saw.

Cameron Carpenter is an aspiring screenwriter, current film and journalism student, and self-diagnosed cinephile, which only sounds bad in certain circles. Devoted fan of comics, movies, theater, Jesus Christ, Sidney Lumet, and Peter O'Toole, he sometimes spends too much time on his Scribd and comicbookmovie.com, but doesn't think you're one to judge, devoted reader. You can follow him on Twitter to watch him talk to people you didn't know exist. Oh, and Daredevil is quite the big deal around here (my head).
