9 Theories On How The MCU Could End

7. A Shift Towards Standalone Films

Rather than bringing the MCU's walls crashing down in apocalyptic fashion, Marvel could choose to gradually phase it out by shifting back towards standalone movies.

There are hints that this is happening already, with Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige hinting that Phase 3 will be followed by something dramatically different.

Before the MCU set the standard for superhero movies, comic adaptations were typically self-contained, dishing out a few instalments before rebooting and reloading.

The original Avengers brought Earths Mightiest Heroes together, Civil War pulled them apart, so perhaps Infinity War and its sequel will send some of them off along entirely different paths where strictly solo adventures are in store?

It doesn't sound like crossovers are going anywhere just yet, since Guardians of the Galaxy 3 director James Gunn has discussed how that movie will set up the next couple of decade's worth of Marvel films, but a gradual shift towards standalone Spider-Man, Captain America and Thor series could already be underway.
