9 Underrated Stephen King Movies

3. Carrie (2013)

Carrie 2013
MGM/Screen Gems

There was a collective eye roll when the remake of Carrie was announced, and with good reason. The Brian De Palma version is rightfully considered a classic, and it was hard to see how a slick modern version would compete.

That said the new version of Carrie isn’t without merit, and while some of the uniqueness has been sanded off the story is still engrossing. Chloe Moretz is awesome as the shy girl with the growing psychic powers, and it’s tragic knowing the outcome isn’t going to happy for her; or anyone else, really. Julianne Moore is also in top form playing Carrie religious mother, and the relationship between them is the best part of the story.

The movie suffers slightly when it has to recreate key scenes from the original (there’s a particularly lame attempt at a jump scare ending) but when taken on its own terms, there’s a lot of like about the new Carrie.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
