9 Upcoming Movies Studios Have No Confidence In
6. Chaos Walking
The Movie
An adaptation of Patrick Ness' Y.A. sci-fi novel The Knife of Never Letting Go, starring Tom Holland as a young man living in a dystopian world where all women have apparently been killed off. When he encounters a mysterious young woman (Daisy Ridley), then, his life is changed forever.
Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) directs, while the supporting cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, David Oyelowo, Cynthia Erivo and Nick Jonas.
What's Wrong?
Chaos Walking started shooting in August 2017 and wrapped by that November, yet at present the film is without a release date after originally being scheduled for March 1, 2019. It is now widely expected to land sometime in 2020.
To date just one official image has been released, and Liman announced earlier this month that reshoots are currently underway, almost exactly a year after it was first announced that the movie needed additional photography.
If that's not reason enough to be concerned, the film has six (!) credited screenwriters (Charlie Kaufman, Jamie Linden, Patrick Ness, Lindsey Beer, Gary Spinelli and John Lee Hancock), and as we all know, "too many cooks..." is a saying for a reason.
Despite Liman's talents, it's tough to imagine Lionsgate having faith in this one being successful, especially given that the Y.A. genre has pretty much died since the film started shooting.
With a stonking $100 million budget, the studio is clearly hoping the visibility of its lead actors might nudge it out of bomb territory, regardless of how good the film actually is (or probably isn't).
