Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them isn't out until November, but Warner Bros. are (rightly) convinced that this sort-of Harry Potter movie will make a killing at the box office, and so have already committed to two sequels. They even have release dates (2018 for the first sequel, 2020 for the second, in case you're wondering and need to make plans in advance).
J.K. Rowling has said this new Potter spin-off series will comprise a trilogy, you see, and whatever J.K. Rowling says absolutely goes. Also, making this into a trilogy gives her something to work on over the next few years aside from those Robert Galbraith novels, doesn't it? Must be nice.
The fact that Fantastic Beasts will consist of three movies does seem a little excessive, but given that Rowling isn't really "adapting" a pre-existing story (Fantastic Beasts was a tiny book written for Comic Relief about magic creatures and didn't have an actual plot), she's technically free to do whatever she wants.
Having so much freedom could result in something really magical. Maybe.
