What You're Expecting

With the seemingly deceased Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) set to return in the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel, it's clear that something fishy is up, and with Warner Bros. refusing to disclose the precise nature of his revival, a left-field surprise seems to be in store.

This led to the prominent theory that the Steve Trevor pictured in promotional materials for Wonder Woman 1984 may actually be Steve Trevor's grandson, with Steve having fathered a child before dying at the end of the first film.

Given the utter lack of context given to the above promotional still, WB clearly wants to keep the waters muddied until a little closer to the film's June 5, 2020 release date.

The REAL Trick

If recent supposed plot information is correct, it actually seems like Steve Trevor will indeed be resurrected, as part of a pact that Diana (Gal Gadot) enters into with Pedro Pascal's still-unnamed character.

It's been heavily speculated that Pascal's smooth-talking politician will offer to resurrect Steve in exchange for Diana tracking down an artefact for him.

If rumours are to be believed - and in this case they certainly are - then Pascal is in fact a God in disguise, and none other than Hades, the God of death and the underworld.

With Chris Pine recently commenting that Steve Trevor won't be appearing in Wonder Woman 3, it would make sense that the character would get a temporary, tragic revival in WW84 only to be spirited away once again when Diana inevitably defeats both Hades and Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
