What You're Expecting

The marketing for Godzilla: King of the Monsters has shown off a whole ton of shock and awe, but lent precious little context to the means through which the Titans emerge to battle one another.

And though King Ghidorah is obviously Godzilla's primary antagonist, pre-release materials have also suggested that this showdown will be set in motion by an eco-terrorist group led by Colonel Jonah Alan (Charles Dance), who is also said to be the film's human villain.

With Alan's character bio noting that he wishes to harvest Titan DNA for material gain, that seems like a solidly insane swerve - the long-dormant monsters are unearthed for financial reasons.

The REAL Trick

With King of the Monsters now starting to screen for press and industry, more reliable plot information is starting to leak out, namely that the eco-terrorist outfit, apparently called Argo, doesn't release the Titans for money at all.

Rather, Alan plots to set the Titans loose on Earth to punish humanity for the collective environmental damage they've caused to Earth - because nothing says payback like setting world-annihilating monsters loose on the planet.

Given that Dance's villain has been largely kept out of the trailers, this eco-terrorist subplot may sideswipe many unsuspecting viewers, especially as it's not quite what any of the marketing materials seemed to imply.
