8. Deux Ex: Human Revolution
Huh? The
Deux Ex franchise, which pits players in a dystopian world of hackers and cyberpunk aesthetics, is renowned for its detailed, morality-based gameplay, and for its great blend of both roleplaying and first-person shooter elements. Taking its cues from
Blade Runner and about a zillion other rain-filled cityscape-based movies (The
Matrix included), the first game proved to be a major hit, though it's the latest entry in the franchise - subtitled
Human Revolution - that's due for cinematic development. According to the movie's director Scott Derrickson
(Sinister), this adaptation will be more like
District 9 than
Blade Runner, and will firmly embrace a lower budget, looking to Neill Blompkamp's South African-set sci-fi hit for inspiration.
Could It Work? There's no reason that this won't work if the script is good - the
Deux Ex world is a complicated one, though, crammed with about eighty-five conspiracies and politic themes. The game is a good blueprint, though, and it's probably a good idea to make the movie on a lower budget so the filmmakers are better inclined to focus on the story elements.
