9 Ways X-Men: Apocalypse Is The Most Frustrating Comic Book Movie Of The Year
2. Even The Action Scenes Are Dull
Even if everything else is disappointing about the new X-Men the action should at least be good, right? Right? Nope, since action has never been Singer’s strong point, and here he appears to think a loud, blaring score and lots of CGI makes for a compelling setpiece; they really don’t Bryan.
There’s no single action beat that highlights this better than the finale, where the gang team up to tackle Apocalypse and his Horsemen, and it’s staggeringly flat. The Doomsday fight in Batman V Superman may have been a bit drawn out, but at least it didn't feel endless.
In Apocalypse the battle just trudges on and on, and when you think it’s about to reach the climax it carries on for another ten minutes. Singer tries to inject it with a little comic book flair now and again, yet this just adds to the campiness instead of the fun.
In doesn’t help that the emotional stakes just aren’t there, and no matter how many buildings crumble or inspiring speeches are made, the whole thing is just hollow noise.
