Once Ava Starr aka Ghost captures Hank, Hope and Scott, she basically regales them with her origin story and her motivations, Bond villain style. She explains that her father was discredited by Hank, and in a desperate attempt to restore his name, he took risks, leading to an accident involving the quantum tunnel.

This accident not only killed both of her parents, but left Ava with "molecular disequilibrium", a horrifying condition where her cells are ripped apart and stitched back together repeatedly every day, causing her to phase in and out of our physical plane.

Foster tried to keep Ava safe, but sadly others in S.H.I.E.L.D. took advantage, training Ava to become an assassin on the promise they'd cure her eventually. Naturally, they lied, and Foster took her under his own wing once S.H.I.E.L.D. was no more.

It's at least a more intriguing backstory for the character than expected, even if it's just clumsily spoonfed to the viewer in a sequence that literally stops the movie dead. Not exactly the most nuanced writing there...
