Aquaman: 10 Best Moments
10. The Submarine Fight
The movie's introduction to an adult Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) sees him intervening as David Kane aka Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), his father Jesse (Michael Beach) and their squad of pirates attempt to hijack a nuclear sub.
Aquaman makes his epic debut by lifting the sub out of the water and into the sky, before coming aboard and making quick work of Manta's subordinates (scored to Rupert Gregson-Williams' sludgy guitar licks, of course).
A fight then breaks out between Aquaman and Manta, which is interrupted by Jesse, who ends up pinned to the floor by a dislodged nuke as the hull begins to fill with water.
Manta pleads with Arthur to help save his father, but Arthur callously retorts, "You killed innocent people, ask the sea for mercy." In order to ensure his son escapes and also give himself a quick death, Jesse then detonates a grenade in his hand.
It's a great set-up for the rest of the movie and beyond because it gives Black Manta a believable motive for revenge, while the limits of Arthur's heroism are made clear (and how this ultimately comes back to bite him).
