Arnold Schwarzenegger's Top 20 Greatest Action Scenes

6. Total Recall - Subway Shootout

A third entry from Verhoeven's 1990 blockbuster. Quaid (Schwarzenegger) has just discovered his wife Lori (Sharon Stone) has been lying to him and that their marriage is a fake memory implant. He escapes to the subway system, pursued by Richter (Micheal Ironside). The scene is memorable for the unfortunate commuter who ends up being used as a human shield. Some interesting bits of trivia about this scene; The subway scenes were all filmed in the Mexico City subway system because it looks like a futuristic, concrete nightmare. The bit in the scene where Quaid smashes the train window, a tiny explosive in the glass was supposed to shatter it a fraction before Schwarzenegger hit it, but it didn't go off and Schwarzenegger smashed the glass for real, badly cutting himself. Also, Total Recall was one of the last films to use mostly miniature and model work. The only CGI sequence is the X-RAY skeletons as people walk through the security checkpoint. You can watch the scene here.
