The Rumour

Following Infinity War's release, there was much debate about what exactly happened to the Avengers - and, well, everyone - turned to dust by Thanos' snap.

A prominent theory suggested that the fallen weren't merely disintegrated, but actually transported to a pocket dimension within the Soul Stone, referred to in the comics as "Soulworld".

This rumour picked up significant traction following Infinity War's home video release, where the Russos confirmed that the orange-hued world Thanos visited after the snap was indeed Soulworld.

After all, for a PG-13 superhero movie aimed at children, it's slightly less traumatic to disappear the snapped heroes rather than totally end their existence.

The Truth

Though it's kept totally ambiguous until the third act of the movie, the inevitable return of the dusted via The Hulk's second snap confirms that all of the victims were indeed dead for real.

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) briefly mentions that he has no recollection of the five years that passed between his demise and revival.

And while many expected The Avengers to re-write time as though the snap never happened, that's not quite the case. The resurrected characters are in fact brought back in 2023 without having aged since their disintegration, with their loved ones well aware that they were gone for half-a-decade.

If nothing else, this certainly invites some interesting storytelling possibilities moving forward, especially for the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home.
