Avengers Endgame Is The Best Comic Book Movie Ever

1. It's The Opposite Of Infinity War, And That's A Good Thing

Ultimately, however, there's another reason why Endgame stands out as the finest comic book movie, and it's all to do with the reaffirming energy it exudes in its concluding act.

Endgame had to be everything Infinity Wasn't. Not in the sense that it had to be less expansive or ambitious (the film doubles down in that respect), but more in the sense that it couldn't be as sombre. There had to be pathos, and the film possesses plenty of it, but it still had to remind everyone that comics are just as fantastical and enjoyable as they are occasionally devastating.

Emerging out of Endgame, the feeling wasn't so much a sense of exhaustion, as was the case with Infinity War, but rather renewal. Several heroes may have passed, but they did so on their own terms and in a way that managed to reiterate the unique brilliance of Marvel's Cinematic Universe. It manages to break everyone's hearts and piece them back together in one motion, reminding us all that, while heroes come and go, this isn't the end, but a new beginning instead.

In the end, watching the most recent Avengers film isn't all that dissimilar to diving headfirst into the umpteenth chapter of a years-long comic book run. It isn't perfect, and it might even be messy at times, but when it all comes together, nothing can ever come as close.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
