Avengers: Infinity War - 14 Things You Probably Didn't Notice
9. Red Skull Is Basically Death
The appearance of Red Skull as the keeper of the Soul Stone was a great touch - not least because it was so much of a surprise - and it was great to see the character reutrn to complete his arc. He's not going to be back, because there's no way that makes sense, but it was a great little moment all the same.
Despite how much it sounded like him, it wasn't Hugo Weaving behind the familiar red face, either - it was Ross Marquand (known for The Walking Dead) who was an impressionist online before his big break.
But more importantly, this scene with Red Skull is effectively the film's nod to the important role Death plays in the Infinity Saga in the comics. Red Skull's ethereal, robed look definitely positions him as a Death stand-in and the fact that he effectively demands the payment of a soul continues the theme.
As in the comics, Thanos basically has to "impress" Death to get what he wants - in this case the Soul Stone, rather than simply Death's favour and the cost comes in blood. That's a pretty clever call-back to the comic's themes.
