Avengers: Infinity War - 23 New Secrets Revealed
10. Thanos LET Gamora Escape
According to the commentary, the scene in which Thanos tells Gamora that he knows she lied to him about the Soul Stone was actually shot twice and the shorter version was used in the film. The other is included on the Deleted Scenes in part and it shows a younger Gamora returning from battle in the name of Thanos.
Interestingly, the scene also includes him telling her he let her escape, which is slightly confusing considering how beloved she's supposed to be to him. Presumably it was all part of his plan.
9. Thanos' Real Motivation
There's been a lot written in the wake of Infinity War's release trying to paint Thanos in a more positive light than is probably fair. The suggestion has been that he HAD to do what he did for the good of the universe and he had no other choice because there wasn't any way he could increase resources and save the universe that way.
But the commentary suggests he COULD have done that, but he chose not to for a very specific reason - because he was an extreme sociopath with a messianic complex:
"People have asked us why Thanos didn't just use the Stones to double the resources in the universe, since clearly, he has not. ... Well, he was told no to an idea that he had that he felt was the only solution. And then was proved right to himself when that solution was not acted upon. So, his Messianic complex - he is now committed to following through on the idea that he had many, many years ago."
It turns out that several drafts of the script also had more of Thanos’ backstory (as was hinted with the suggestion that he had 30 minutes more screentime initially) and more scenes set on Titan, but all very cut at various stages.
