Baftas 2021: All The Major Winners & Losers
1. Best Film And Best Direction - Nomadland
The stage is well and truly set for Chloé Zhao to become the second woman and first woman of colour to pick up the Oscar for Best Director, particularly having picked up the Bafta for Nomadland in the fortnight prior to this massive ceremony.
Having directed her debut film Songs My Brother Taught Me in 2015, Zhao has risen through the ranks of independent cinema, scored an Oscar nomination (and almost certainly a win) and directed a gigantic Marvel film before turning 40. Recent reports suggest she is helming a Sci-Fi Western Dracula project for Universal...whatever it is, count me in.
Not only did Zhao triumph as Best Director, she also picked up the big award of the night for Best Film for the epic yet intimate story of nomads. There is now truly no film which can rival this tale of working class America for the biggest prize at the Academy Awards: Best Picture.
