Batman V Superman: 10 Mistakes It Made That Justice League Must Avoid
7. Assuming Everyone Is A Comic-Book Fan
Batman v Superman's references to the wider universe tended to be rather heavy-handed and out of place. Rather than having a couple of winks and nods in the background, Snyder opted for entire scenes and gigantic set-pieces, much like the Knightmare sequence during the second act.
At best, these moments disrupted the flow of the film and at worst, they utterly confused audiences who simply had no idea why the Omega symbol, Parademons and the Flash cameo were so important.
And that's a problem, especially if the DCEU is to enjoy the kind of mass-market appeal that its rival does. The vast majority of moviegoers aren't as tuned in to comic-book lore as Batman v Superman expected them to be, and that left a lot of viewers cold - just look at the reception of the film for evidence of that.
So what can Justice League do? It shouldn't axe scenes of this nature altogether - after all, they're building toward DC's endgame - but it should put them in the right place. A sequence like the Knightmare, crafted for die-hard fans of these movies, should have been in the one place that die-hard fans tend to look - during the credits.
It's where Thanos first appeared, and this way, the general public gets a more easily digestible flick and DC can still continue to build the excitement for their upcoming projects.
