Batman V Superman: 7 Reasons Ben Affleck Is The Best Batman Ever

3. Older, Wearier Batman Is Just More Interesting

Warner Bros.
Zack Snyder and his writers made the right decision when they decided to go for an older, wearier version of the character - not some young buck in his late-twenties, but a guy who had already experienced life as a superhero for two decades and is worse off for it. By way of going down that path alone, Ben Affleck's Batman is made superior to the somewhat lacking efforts that came before him. Batman isn't all that interesting when he's younger and less vulnerable, but when he's - as Affleck once put it - "bloodied and sagging," things are a lot more captivating. Christian Bale steered his Batman towards the burned out side of things in The Dark Knight Rises, of course, but something about it felt slightly forced and inauthentic; Affleck, on the other hand, has himself been through the ringer across the span of his own career. He's taken the punches, and so it's easier to buy him as a battered superhero. The very idea of a Batman who isn't in his prime taking on Superman is an inherently intriguing one, and though the film doesn't push the whole "Batman is an old man" thing quite as far as it probably should have, there's no denying that his being a veteran gives Affleck an edge as far as on-screen Batmans go.
