Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - 8 Problems With The Established Universe

6. A Reverse-Engineered Universe

Another problem with DC's shared cinematic universe being announced out of the blue is that all the connective tissue between the movies will need to be reverse-engineered as they are released. To use Marvel Studios as a comparison; Kevin Feige has been very open about the fact that he has a general outline of the MCU years in advance, including how all of the movies link together, and which specific characters and easter eggs will appear in what sub-franchise to create the bigger picture.

On the other hand, Man Of Steel wasn't designed as the launch point for a shared universe - it made no reference to any other DC characters or projects, leaving Batman V Superman faced with a huge amount of world-building. Dawn Of Justice needs to introduce Batman and his mythology including Alfred, Gotham City and (yawn) the death of his parents, establish the character of Diana Price/Wonder Woman before her own standalone feature, possibly introduce Aquaman and/or The Flash and sow the seeds for the two-part Justice League adaptation.

Similarly, Suicide Squad needs to introduce and establish almost a dozen new characters including the Joker, Amanda Waller and the A.R.G.U.S. organisation, with just the Wonder Woman solo movie being released before all of the studio's heavy hitters need to be united, and faced with a common enemy, in November 2017's Justice League Part One.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
