Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - 8 Problems With The Established Universe
1. There's No Real Creative Direction
While DC should be commended for attempting to take a more filmmaker-driven approach to their cinematic universe, having so many different visual styles and aesthetics spread across a shared continuity could present a real problem if there isn't someone pointing them all in the same general direction, given how all of these projects exist in the same world.
One of the major criticisms levelled at Marvel Studios is that they operate under more of a television model; each movie must have a similar tone and hit a number of studio-mandated story points. However, in Kevin Feige they have their 'showrunner' that makes sure that each movie fits into the overall universe, and keeps within the existing continuity.
Zack Snyder seems to be at the head of the DCCU hierarchy from a filmmaking perspective, tasked with a number of pivotal casting decisions as well as directing Man Of Steel, Batman V Superman and the two-part Justice League. However, multiple scripts being commissioned for both Wonder Woman and Aquaman indicating that the studio is unsure of how to approach the potentially-tricky projects. Can directors as vastly different as Snyder, James Wan and Ben Affleck each make the movies they want to make, while also following the shared universe template set out by Warner Bros? Only time will tell.
