Batman vs Superman Movie: 10 Choices For Recasting Commissioner Gordon

3. The Returning Cast Member Commissioner: Gary Oldman

gary oldman Of course, that may just be too much for audiences (not to mention the majority of fans) to handle, so why not give them more of the same? As one of the best parts of an absolutely incredible supporting cast, Gary Oldman was a terrific James Gordon. Whether you loved or hated The Dark Knight Rises, it's hard to disagree with the assessment that it was really the commissioner who stole the show from under Bane and Batman, single handedly laying the ground for Gotham Central by proving that a Batman film that ignores Batman for a third of its run time can still work as long as the focus is right. Whether facing off against The Joker, standing up to Harvey Dent or mounting a desperate final mission to bring down Bane, Gary Oldman's Gordon grew from side character to main billing over the course of the three films. It was the smaller touches that worked most effectively, though. Establishing Gordon as a family man, one of the few non-corrupt officers in the city, and someone who went all out to get the job done, Oldman created a hero that mirrored and enhanced Batman, showing just why he was needed and what the city would look like without him there to defend it. All of which is to say that keeping Oldman on as Gordon wouldn't be the worst idea in the world. If Bond can maintain M, there's no reason why we can't suspend our disbelief about him being the only person to maintain their looks in the retooling of the series.

I split my time between Cardiff, and Birmingham, where I work for a youth engagement charity and write about books, films, comics and any crossover between them. Any subject involving Batman, the X-Men or Doctor Who is bound to get me excited.
