20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
9. Indiana Jones & the Dial of Destiny
Indiana Jones is one of cinema's quintessential "too big to fail" franchises, or so we all thought until 2023, when the belated fifth film, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was released.
It was just assumed that an IP as iconic as Indiana Jones, while still fronted by Harrison Ford no less, would do easy numbers at the box office and gross $600-700 million on the low end.
But it concluded its run with just $384 million - a calamitous figure against its gigantic $419 million gross budget.
As for why an IP as beloved as Indy flopped? You can point to a few factors - the feeling that it was an unnecessary, belated sequel, the divisiveness of the previous sequel, lukewarm reviews, and a crowded release window filled with more appealing options like Barbie and Oppenheimer.
For the great many who thought that Indiana Jones was a bulletproof brand, The Dial of Destiny categorically proved otherwise, ending the franchise on a financial whimper.
