20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

8. Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe was truly doomed from the get-go, because spending $200 million on a blockbuster reboot of He-Man - an IP which hasn't been popular for literally decades - was downright fiscally irresponsible.

Amazon MGM were presumably hoping that their blatantly Guardians of the Galaxy-flavoured reimagining would become a word-of-mouth breakout, but it ended up grossing just $114 million.

This can be attributed to not only He-Man's lack of relevance among younger generations but also the film's relatively lukewarm reviews, and marketing which failed to differentiate it from the many other big-budget action-adventure flicks released every year.

One can imagine that Masters of the Universe might've fared better 10-15 years ago when these sorts of frothy movies generally performed better at the box office, but the moment the film was announced with that budget and a lack of major stars at the forefront, it was destined to flop hard.
