20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
17. Megalopolis
Love it or hate it, Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis is one of the most ambitious big-budget swings of the century - an epic sci-fi drama which Coppola spent the better part of 50 years trying to get made.
After many years of struggling to finance the picture, the filmmaker dissolved a portion of his ultra-lucrative wine business, ultimately spending $120 million of his own money on the movie.
Megalopolis' final budget was said to be roughly $135 million, and though few were expecting it to turn a profit theatrically, even fewer expected the new tentpole from the director of The Godfather to tank quite this badly.
At the end of its run, Megalopolis had collected just $14.4 million globally - not even 10% of its budget and an abject disaster any way you slice it.
Though the film has its loyal defenders and many will respect Coppola for betting his own money on something so clearly un-commercial, the easy consensus is that it's a bold failure from a filmmaker who hasn't made a good film in almost 30 years.
