Billy Crystal: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Miracle Max - The Princess Bride

Crystal has a small, scene stealing role in The Princess Bride; a film that€™s already overloaded with great performances and quotes. In the third act Montoya and Fezzik bring Westley€™s dead body to Miracle Max €“ the king€™s former medicine man €“ to be revived. Max is supposed to be around 2,000 years old in the story, so Crystal is buried under layers of make-up for the part €“ make-up that€™s thankfully much more convincing than Mr. Saturday Night.

Crystal then proceeds to steal the movie for five minutes as a grumpy, fast talking grouch who reluctantly agrees to help. The actor is clearly having a blast as he spits out endless one-liners, and it€™s to his credit that even with all the make-up he manages to make the character so expressive.

The only downside to his performance is that Max is barely in the movie, but what€™s there is arguably his finest comedic work.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
