Birds Of Prey - Every Character Explained

5. Bud & Lou

Birds of Prey Harley Quinn
Warner Bros.

The reveal of Bud & Lou came absolutely out of nowhere, and has already been warmly received by Harley fans hoping for lots of comic book references. They’re a pair of hyenas rescued from Gotham Zoo by Harley Quinn, named in reference to comedians Abbott & Costello.

In various versions they’ve been stolen from Harley by thieves trying to auction them as exotic pets (spoiler alert: it did not end well for these thieves), and given rabies by Joker. In that storyline, Harley kills them in an act of mercy, though they eventually recover from her attempt on their lives and become her faithful pets again.

Whether they’ll have a major involvement in the story or will just be set dressing for the new Harley probably won’t be answered until the film releases in February. Certainly, Harley’s ability to sic them would be cinematic, but potentially also too violent for a character they’re clearly aiming for a sympathetic antihero slant with.

Maybe instead they’ll just simply be pets, only attacking when cornered or in defence of their mistress against a truly evil foe. With them around though, things certainly won’t be boring.
