After the opening sequence, we're taken to Oakland, California in 1992, where T'Challa accosts his brother N'Jobu (played by Sterling K Brown in typically excellent fashion).

This location is no accident. Not only is Oakland where Ryan Coogler grew up, but it's also the home of the Black Panther movement. And while the film is careful not to mention them explicitly, N'Jobu's radicalisation is almost certainly a nod to the rise of the group and its place in Californian history.
