BlacKkKlansman Review: 8 Ups & 1 Down

6. The Darkly Hilarious Script

Though the movie's subject matter is inherently serious, Lee does a fantastic job balancing the film's tone with some uproarious injections of pithy humour.

Without undermining the threat the KKK poses nor the danger of Stallworth and Zimmerman's mission, Lee makes the most of the premise's inherent absurdity, especially Stallworth's posing as a white man over the phone and the Klan's inability to figure out the ruse.

It's common to seek out levity in even the grimmest situations, and to that end Lee adds just enough dark humour to ensure the movie is as entertaining as it is fascinating, informative and horrifying.
