The James Bond series doesn't exactly have a stellar relationship with continuity, though in many ways that's the beauty of it as well: if something doesn't work, everyone just moves on and forgets about it for the next one. It can, however, be frustrating when promising plot threads are abandoned, such as Diamonds Are Forever pretty much pretending that the criminally underrated, George Lazenby-starring one-off On Her Majesty's Secret Service didn't exist. Skyfall and Bond 24 writer John Logan, however, has promised that this new movie won't sweep Skyfall under the rug, saying, My goal is to write a great movie thats appropriate, to build on what we did on Skyfall, but make it its own unique animal. While it won't be a direct sequel in the vein of the messy Quantum Of Solace, expect a spiritual follow-up which will likely make comment on M's death, and continue to establish the relationships between Bond, the new M (Ralph Fiennes), Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw). Frankly, it sounds like a perfect compromise, in not clinging too closely to what came before, while introducing some of the "old irony" that Craig says the series needs.
