Bond 25: 10 Things That We Need In The Next 007 Film
5. Keep M, Moneypenny And Q At Headquarters
The thrill of James Bond films derives from witnessing the exploits of the enviable secret agent 007 himself, the man with no equal. For decades we’ve been swept up in the adventure led by the cinematic hero as he alone swigs martinis and foils fiendish plots.
Giving the characters of M, Moneypenny and Q too much agency and involvement in the mission, however, comes closer to turning these films into spy ensemble pieces like Mission: Impossible.
What happened to the days where M would simply give 007 his mission briefing from behind a polished wooden desk, where Moneypenny would trade witticisms and casual flirtations with Bond while providing useful intel, where Q would equip Bond with the latest gadgets sure to come in handy for the mission and send him on his way?
While a little added development for secondary characters surely isn’t a bad thing, as the work done with Judi Dench’s M previously showed us, these films should primarily be about James Bond. If we wanted to see Ralph Fiennes in action scenes, we’d watch Harry Potter.
