The deeply silly yet ludicrously entertaining Killer Klowns from Outer Space may have performed modestly at the box office on original release, but thanks to its cult following, it's grossed more than $40 million in revenue from theatrical re-releases, home video, and merchandising.

Despite this, the Chiodo Brothers haven't been able to produce a sequel in the near-40 years since the original's release, though it certainly hasn't been for lack of trying.

And in 2012 they got close, as they announced Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space in 3D - a part-remake, part-sequel which, per the title, would be released in 3D for maximum schlock-factor.

Original protagonist Mike Tobacco (Grant Cramer) was set to return, teaming up with two street performers to battle the returning Klowns, but back in 2021 Stephen Chiodo revealed that Syfy would only provide a $2 million budget for the film - just a hair more than the $1.8 million the original was made for in 1988.

Knowing that the brothers couldn't produce their intended vision for the film, they walked away, and the last thing we heard about the series was the so-insane-it-might-be-true rumour that Ryan Gosling is producing a franchise reboot.
