Every Cancelled John Carpenter Film We NEVER Got To See
1. Darkchylde
After taking a decade-long hiatus from filmmaking, Carpenter returned with the 2010 psychological horror, The Ward. Rather than taking another 10-year break, Carpenter got to work on his next feature, Darkchylde, that same year.
Based on Randy Queen's comic book, Darkchylde focuses on a cursed teen, Ariel Chylde, who transforms into the monsters from her recurring nightmares to fight evil.
Even though superhero blockbusters were rampant in Hollywood at the time (and still are), Darkchylde seemed unique enough to avoid being lost in the shuffle. Carpenter intended the special effects to be mostly practical, giving Darkchylde an edge over CGI-heavy action flicks.
Although there have been a good few dark and supernatural superhero flicks, only a couple have really managed to break into the mainstream. If Darkchylde was a hit, it could've reinvigorated the genre and rejuvenated Carpenter's flagging career at the same time.
But it wasn't meant to be. Although Carpenter said things were progressing in 2014, nothing has been heard from Darkchylde since.
Despite the fact that John Carpenter hasn't made a feature in 15 years, it'd be a cause for celebration to see the esteemed auteur return to the director's chair, for Darkchylde or any other film, for that matter.
