Every Cancelled John Carpenter Film We NEVER Got To See
2. Fangland
In this adaptation of John Marks' novel, a TV producer called Evangeline Harker heads to Eastern Europe to confront infamous crime lord, Ion Torgu, hoping to find a news story. To her surprise and horror, Torgu is revealed to be an ancient vampire.
Fangland serves as a modern retelling of Dracula, going so far as replicating the structure of the source material. Most of the story is told via e-mails, much like how Bram Stoker's novel was detailed through letters and diary entries.
Shortly after Fangland's release in 2007, Carpenter was being eyed to adapt it into a feature. Hillary Swank, who was fresh off winning her second Academy Award for Million Dollar Baby, was expected to lead, giving the project a ton of star power.
But when the world was hit with a massive writer's strike and a financial crisis, Carpenter couldn't wait around for things to resolve themselves, which encouraged him to leave.
Wes Craven was hired to replace Carpenter several years later, but the legendary director's sudden death led to the Fangland adaptation being put on hold indefinitely.
