Captain Marvel Trailer Review: 9 Ups & 2 Downs
3. It Doesn't Ruin The Entire Plot
The two worst things about trailers these days are that they have those awful pre-trailer teases for no reason (as if the audience need a TL:DR version before they can commit to watching a couple of minutes) and that they give away way too much. Trailer studios are given way too much power to get the shots in there that will sell the trailer, without any consideration for how much it ruins of the final film. And yes, Marvel have been guilty of it themselves in the past.
But here, the agenda is more akin to a mood board. We get world building and character hints (some of which, like the Skrull, Jude Law's Mar-Vell and Coulson) are limited to single shots and a rough idea of Captain Marvel coming to Earth and discovering a mysterious connection to the place and to her former identity as Carol Danvers.
Other than that, if you didn't know about the Skrull story, you'd be forgiven for not really knowing the main thrust of the story. And that's a brave thing to do, but it also allows the trailer more space to really show off Captain Marvel herself.
