Cats 2019: Every Song Ranked From Least To Most Horrifying
9. The Jellicle Ball
This scene was a treat to watch, overall. Seeing everyone showcase their talents in dance was a pure, masterful spectacle that was almost a break from the absurdity - though it didn't escape the horror of its introduction, with creepy chanting and a somewhat disturbing... prayer? To the moon? That involved them doing interpretative dance while their tails did strange things.
To be fair to the sequence, however, it's far enough into the film that you've more or less accepted the strangeness of the sight of dancing humanoid cats and can really enjoy the skill of the dancers, all of whom are genuinely talented professionals who do an amazing job in this film. And the VFX in this scene is genuinely impressive, animating tails to move naturally along with the dancing.
There are really zero complaints when it comes to the performance of the ensemble, and this is where they really get to shine, the musical as it was originally intended (one huge dance party with a sorry excuse for a story you can write off because the dancing and singing is just that good) in its purest form.
