Cats 2019: Every Song Ranked From Least To Most Horrifying
10. Old Deuteronomy
This song puts a lot of the cult comparisons for this film into clear perspective. It's not the worst, nor the weirdest song, but it does show a lot of humans trying to be cats nuzzling Judi Dench not trying very hard at all to be a cat, in her sumptuous coat hiding her very human hands. Everyone's incredibly emotional to greet Old Deuteronomy in this scene, to the point that it gets vaguely unsettling.
It doesn't help that the song is followed directly up by the weird chanting that segues into the Jellicle Ball, but the sequence itself is a little bit sweet, and a little bit odd. It effectively communicates how important "Old Deut" is to the Cats, and while her slow reveal in the fog and her many fawning cult cats following in variations of on twos or on all fours are a little... odd, it's one of the milder sequences in this film.
And honestly, who could blame them for being so reverent? It's Judi Dench, after all.
