Cats 2019: Every Song Ranked From Least To Most Horrifying
7. The Rum Tum Tugger
Jason Derulo as the overtly sexual, 80s rock star type Rum Tum Tugger was surprisingly fun to watch, but the irony is that, in comparison to the stage musical, Derulo's Tugger was... mild. The stage musical had a lot of hip thrusting and female cats thirsting over Tugger like groupies, and the film seems to have toned it down for a supposedly wider audience.
That didn't stop it, however, from making some strange choices. At one point, Tugger goes back and forth on whether he wants milk or not, and in the end nonsensically sings "MIIIIIIILK" on a long note, making the audiene question their sanity.
There's also the equally questionable moment when Tugger holds protagonist slash audience proxy Victoria's foot up to his mouth and uses it like a microphone and gets perilously close to putting his mouth to it, which, while an impressive feat of ballet and flexibility, is... weird.
The sequence is fun enough, and the set of a giant milk bar is fantastic to look at. It's just never quite high energy enough to meet the heights of Skimbleshanks, and isn't quite weird enough to hit the lows of the next entries on this list.
