1. In Bruges (2008)
If were looking at Colin Farrells best performances (which we are, obviously) then are you really surprised that his turn in In Bruges, Martin McDonaghs pitch black comedy about two hapless Irish hitmen, found its way into the top spot? Farrell is so comfortable in this role it almost feels like hes playing himself; his true self that is, not that rugged, marketable bad boy you see in from photo-shoots, but the sensitive Irish lad that figured out a way to do what he loves. Sometimes Farrell seems to coast his way through certain roles (more on that shortly), but here he really turns it on, delivering his total A-game. Hes a whirlwind of different emotions and switches between them like you might expect a hired murderer to; hes dark but witty, smoulderingly magnetic but managing to still conveying a child-like vulnerability that makes his character, Ray, impossible not to root for. In Bruges came out amidst rumours of personal problems and after a slew of questionable performances his next move really could have been considered make-or-break. Looks like Farrell chose wisely, and with In Bruges he once again reaffirmed himself as Hollywood A-list material.
