Comic Con 2018: 10 Things We Wanted Announced (But Weren't)
8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix
While we're on the subject of Fox's presence at Comic-Con 2018, let's talk about Dark Phoenix.
For years now, Dark Phoenix has been hyped up as the big X-Men film. It features long-time series writer and producer Simon Kinberg stepping up to the plate and taking on directing duties for the first time ever. It's starring the beloved cast of the First Class-era films, as well as the well-cast but underused younger cast from the deservedly derided Apocalypse. And to top it all off, it has been promised to be a more faithful adaptation of the classic Dark Phoenix comic book arc.
In a whole lot of ways, this sounds like an easy slam dunk for Fox at Comic-Con. Trot the film's beloved cast out, tease the storyline and the alleged involvement of the Skrulls, and roll some footage of Jean as the Phoenix. The crowd goes wild, the trailer goes viral, and boom, you've immediately got a solid start to a marketing campaign.
Instead, Fox completely ignored Dark Phoenix. Originally set for release this November, it's release has been pushed back to February because of extra reshoots and negative reactions to initial test screenings. But even with a February release, this is the only Comic-Con before then.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters doesn't come out until May of next summer, yet it had one of the most vocal presences at Comic-Con this year.Even if Fox wasn't looking to premiere a trailer to the public just yet, at least say something, anything, about your upcoming alleged blockbuster to make it feel less like you're just sweeping it under the rug.
