Comic Con 2018: 10 Things We Wanted Announced (But Weren't)
9. New Mutants
The state of Fox's Marvel properties remains very up in the air. Up until just a few months ago, director Josh Boone's self-described 'horror' take on the X-Men franchise, New Mutants, was set to be released in April.
But then, pretty much out of nowhere, it's release was bumped back by a full ten months, to February of 2019. This was unexpected, to say the least, with reports coming out that Fox was looking to completely restructure the film in reshoots after some less-than-successful test screenings. But then, when Fox decided to push Dark Phoenix's release date back as well, it took the February 2019 spot and New Mutants was rescheduled for August 2019.
So now, New Mutants has been pushed back a full sixteen months. Further reports have since emerged that the film is essentially going through extensive reshoots that are looking to make the film much more horror-inspired as well as adding an entirely different villain. In its own right, this is not good news. But then there's the added bonus of the Disney/Fox merger being on the horizon which means this entire film may be scrapped or thrown out onto a streaming service for minimal cost.
An announcement about New Mutants at the Fox panel would have gone a long way towards reassuring fans that they weren't simply pushing this film off into oblivion. Instead, Fox decided to focus entirely on Deadpool 2... a film that's already been released. Obviously.
