Comic Con 2019: 10 Biggest Rumours

5. The Future Of Game Of Thrones

Game Of Thrones Every Episode Ranked
HBO

Game of Thrones Season 8 might've generated a whirlwind of controversy as it came to an end, but this isn't the last viewers have seen of Westeros on the small screen. Several spin-off prequels are planned, and while HBO have done nothing to imply that the GOT Comic Con panel will be anything other than a victory lap of sorts, it's easy to see why it'd be in their interests to tease the future - or technically past, maybe? - of the franchise this month.

Jane Goldman is set to helm a GOT spin-off set in the past, without the Lannisters, but with the Starks. Details are scarce apart from that, but given the frosty reception to Season 8, it stands to reason that HBO may want to put the finale behind them and bring a brand new thing for fans to look forward to for Comic Con.

Granted there may be a degree of scepticism where that's concerned, but it's still in their interest to ensure Game of Thrones remains talked about, and that fans are excited about what's to come.

That's probably why fans believe there's more to this panel than a simple victory lap. Only time will tell, though, if that turns out to be the case.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
