20 Most WTF Horror Movies Of The 2020s (So Far)
6. The Ugly Stepsister
One of the boldest and most confident horror debuts in recent years, The Ugly Stepsister is a loose, darkly comedic adaptation of the Brothers Grimm's fairy-tale "Aschenputtel," which was itself based on the story of Cinderella.
And this couldn't be any further from the Disney version of the tale you're surely familiar with - for one, the focus is less on Cinders than one of her stepsisters, Elvira (Lea Myren), and it's also a distinctly R-rated affair that chronicles the increasingly depraved cosmetic surgery Elvira is subjected to in the pursuit of "beauty."
There's a deep vein of satirical cynicism percolating underneath, taking to task society's emphasis on defining a woman's worth through her looks, and the means through which the patriarchy pits women against one another in the pursuit of resources.
Blichfeldt takes this to some legitimately shocking places, testing the intestinal fortitude of even the most hardened body horror enthusiast, aided by an absolutely magnificent, even Oscar-worthy performance from Lea Myren in the title role.
